Peter J. McGuire Labor Day Ceremony In Collingswood Friday

The ceremony is at the Collingswood Grand Ballroom Friday morning.

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ — The Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO Labor Council will host the 124th annual Peter J. McGuire Labor Day observance event on Friday, Aug. 31, at the Collingswood Grand Ballroom, 315 White Horse Pike, 9 a.m. The ceremony will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Peter J. McGuire Memorial in Arlington Cemetery on Cove Road in Pennsauken at 11:15 a.m.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, State Sen. President Steve Sweeney, U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez and Rep. Donald Norcross (D-1) are all scheduled to speak during the ceremony. Over 400 Labor Council officers, delegates, local union officials, union members, elected officials and scholarship recipients will be in attendance.

The event is named for Peter J. McGuire, regarded as the “father” of Labor Day and May Day. Read more about his story here.

Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to students who are either union members or are related to union members, and who will be attending Camden County College, Rowan College at Gloucester County, Rowan University-Camden or Rutgers University-Camden.

Alfred C. Laubsch, the Business Manager of the International Brotherhood of the Electrical Workers Local 30, will receive the 2018 George E. Norcross Jr. Humanitarian Award for Community Service. Officials will also announce a South Jersey memorial is being added to the State Historic Register.
