Armistice Day - A Day for Korean Vets

Special Report: 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice

WASHINGTON, July 26, 2013 - The Korean War, which began June 25, 1950, with the North Korean army's invasion of South Korea, officially ended July 27, 1953, a day now officially recognized as Armistice Day.

The signing marked the end of the longest negotiated armistice in history: 158 meetings spread over two years and 17 days. The Korean War as the first time the world united under the banner of the United Nations to stand up to aggression and support the rule of law.

More than 1.7 million Americans served in Korea during the 1950-1953 war. A total of 36,574 Americans were killed.

Today, one of America’s closest allies is the Republic of Korea. All told, 22 countries fought aggression under the banner of the United Nations.
