Authorities Find Nearly 700 Grams Of Heroin, 1 Kilogram Of Cocaine In Bergen Man's Home

BREAKING: Jose D. Martinez, 50, allegedly conspired with another man to distribute the heroin and cocaine, authorities said.

Authorities found nearly 700 games of heroin in a Bergen County man's possession and charged him and another man with conspiring to distribute heroin and cocaine, said U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.

Jose D. Martinez, 50, of Palisades Park, and Hasan J. Johnson, 37, of Chester, Pennsylvania, were arrested were charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. Martinez was also charged with possession with intent to distribute 100 or more grams of heroin.

Both men were arrested Monday night and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph A. Dickson in Newark federal court Tuesday.

The arrests came after law enforcement officers saw Johnson leave a Palisades Park residence Monday with a bag and pulled him over after he allegedly committed several traffic violations, Fishman said. Johnson gave officers consent to search his vehicle, where they found about one kilogram of cocaine in the bag, authorities said.

Later that night, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the residence where they found Martinez in possession of a package containing another kilogram of cocaine and 694 grams of heroin, Fishman said.

Both the conspiracy and possession charges carry a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine.
