Neighbors Helping Neighbors is about getting people jobs, getting them out of unemployment and getting people to help others in their own job searches. ReferenceUSA Is one of the tools we are exploring and utilizing in our job searches; it is free, easy and full of information that one can use in connecting with businesses and other job generating opportunities.
ReferneceUSA.com can be accessed by typing in the link into your internet browser address bar. The best way, however, is to go to Jerseyclicks.com and select the site from that last. It is halfway down the page on the left side and, when accessed from Jerseyclicks, you will be prompted to type in your library card number. This number, found on the back of the library card under the bar code, is your key to accessing an enormous amount of useful contact information that can be used in a job search!

ReferenceUSA has a search engine that allows a detailed search for very specific records. You can use it to create a large mailing list of potential job locations in a short period of time, say ten minutes. Depending on what your search parameters are, you can literally get 1,000 results. There are various filters too to narrow things down. Included in your results can be the company executive name, how many people are employed, what the company made last year and whether or not it is verified or not, that is, whether it still exists. I have contacted a few companies on my lists that do not have verified next to them, however, and the correct people were there to pick up the phone!
Perhaps the best part is you do not need a pad and paper to write down the torrent of information you will have at your disposal. Once you have your list, you can save it or print is out. First, you select the records you want with a limit being 200 at a time. Then you can print them out on your computer or save them to your hard drive as a PDF file or as an Excel file. There are other options that let you select what you want saved so you do not have an excess amount of information.
Come to our meeting, this Monday, December 3, at 12:15 for more information!
The economy still does not seem like it is going anywhere and neither does the unemployment holding so many people back. We cannot give up, however, and must work and push our way out of this, unemployment or underemployment, whatever it may be and move forward with our lives. Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors is here to help and help we shall!
Remember, the first step to a good, productive job search is to remain positive. It is NOT the only step, but do not make the mistake of the cynic and laugh at this step. A positive attitude, a refusal to give up, will yield far better results than a negative attitude and settling for what hand is dealt to you.
I would like to share this positive story of a middle aged woman who dug herself out of long term unemployment.
I have her five bits of advice below. In addition, I added my own thoughts on each point. Read the article as she adds a little more to each.
1. Remember you have value. Incredibly important and part of keeping positive. Seeing your peers succeed while you struggle along can be devastating, killing your spirit very slowly. Remember, though, you have value, use, you always have. Money and a job do not determine a person’s worth. ACTIONS PROVE A PERSON’S WORTH!
2. Listen to everyone’s advice but sift through it. I include the media in this. If it bleeds, it leads and good news does not normally sell papers or ad space on television. People are full of advice, but it is not necessarily correct or correct for you! People base advice on their own experiences and if your career goal, say, to become a technical writer, is different form there career, say, in sales, your goals, accomplishments and values may seem strange and of little value to them. Their tactics, too, may be of no value to you!
And some people are just stupid. I know one person who received advice from a family member and that advice was really just a list of reasons as to why that person was going nowhere. These included the implication that the individual did not understand the value of a dollar. Untrue and depressing!
3. If you are newly unemployed, start your search immediately. Do not allow stagnation to settle in. And do not wade in the sea of information on unemployment for too long. Bad news can drown all positive thoughts sinking you!
4. Consider a career coach. And keep Point Two of this list in mind! Career coaches can be from many different fields. Many of them, like most people, mean well and they want to help. But your career might be different from what they normally coach people on. Remember, too, that career coaches also cost money.
5. Do NOT stop living because you are unemployed. Relates to Point One and Keeping Positive, one of the core values of Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors! Obviously travel and spending are cut severally, but be social, which is part of networking, and engage in activities that stimulate your mind and give you a sense of control.
