Rapunzel's Dilemma

Ever wonder what those ingredients are in your shampoo? Take a stroll with me down the hair product aisle and join me in my confusion.

The other day I found myself searching the aisle’s of Harmon’s trying to find a decent shampoo product for my hair. I was born with baby fine hair that chose to remain that way well into adulthood with only the promise it will get finer with age. (Like wine I suppose?)

As I reached for the gleaming white and green bottle of the 23.00 dollar shampoo my thoughts turned to “What would Rapunzel buy?” I suppose the most fabled head of hair in all the land would shudder at the price point of this product! With all the bottles of shampoo she would go through washing that impressive mane, Rapunzel and the prince would be forced to take out a second mortgage on the castle in no time! Does it really warrant the cost? I mean, isn’t a bottle of the cheap shampoo basically the same stuff? What could be in this pricey “poo” that makes it worth dishing out the bucks? I looked quizzically at the back of the bottle to get an idea of what I was about to plop down 23 dollars for. Okay, first ingredient water. I am familiar with that! Second up is ammonium laurly sulfate (huh?) followed by sodium chloride, hey isn’t that salt? The rest of the lists of magic ingredients are far too long winded like hydroxethylcellulose! Hm, this isn’t helping me one bit! Since I don’t hold a degree in chemical engineering I guess I have no clue what I am looking at. Here for example…. on the front of the bottle it states it will “promote resilience and renewal!” To my hair or to my soul, I wonder? Sounds good in theory! Looking at the less expensive shampoo, it too has a list of tongue twisting ingredients while promising just as a brilliant outcome as the high end stuff!

Alright I have been in the shampoo aisle for an hour and a half now and they may start charging me rent or make me restock the shelves if I hang out here any longer.

I hesitantly walked to the register with my shampoo in hand. “Have you found everything you were looking for today?” asks the clerk. “Well I guess but it wasn’t easy!” I answered with a bit of exasperation. “That will be $3.12.” said the clerk. “Here you go.” I responded as I handed over the cash. Yes, as you might have figured out I went with the bottle of Suave shampoo. It may not make my hair as resilient and renewed in the long run but I am twenty bucks ahead of the game. Maybe I can use the money I saved for a good looking hat!
