Curly's Ice Cream Makes Heights Its Newest Home

Third generation of the Meiers family opens homemade ice cream shop on Route 17 in Heights

The Meiers family have brought its homemade ice cream brand, which continues to serve the Riverdale community for more than 50 years, to a new home right here in Hasbrouck Heights.

The Meiers family held its official grand opening Sunday for its second location of Curly’s Ice Cream now located on Route 17 south in the strip mall located right off Williams Avenue.  The new Heights location is owned by the third generation of the Meier family, Chris and his wife Kerrie.

“We are really excited about being in this area as it’s a really nice location and the neighbors are great,” Chris Meier said on opening day.

He has been manager of the Riverdale shop for the past six years along with his parents Amy and Barry Meier. Barry’s father Curly started the ice cream business back in 1958 opening the shop in Riverdale which the family members say quickly became a landmark in that area for its homemade ice cream and specialty ice cream cakes.

Chris has been manager of the Riverdale location for the past six years. He decided he wanted to open up his own location closer to home as he and his wife are based in Hoboken. When the family began its search for the second location they didn’t have to look much further once they found Hasbrouck Heights, Amy Meier said. Once they walked in the vacant shop they just saw so much possibility, she explained adding that it’s a whole new idea for them to have a shop with some seating as the Riverdale location has a walk-up window.

Along with the homemade flavors they are known for such as chocolate raspberry truffle, rum raisin, banana oreo just to name a few (as there are many more) are also other members of the Curly’s Ice Cream crew who are very much like family.

Terri Kimak, who was been with the Riverdale location for more than 10 years will serve as the manager at the Heights location. Julianne Curtis who has also been part of the original Riverdale location will be joining the Heights crew as well.

Aside for the homemade ice cream, waffle bowls and speciality ice cream cakes are other frozen delights such as tortonies, which is vanilla ice cream with coconut flakes and a cherry and tortuffos, vanilla ice cream with rainbow or chocolate sprinkles.

The new shop will also soon serve gelato.

All this week the shop is offering contests and give-a-ways to customers in celebration of its grand opening.
