Elderly Man Dies After Alleged Attack At Meadowlands Racetrack

BREAKING: John Bayiokos, 57, was charged with aggravated assault.

An 85-year-old man died from injuries suffered after he was allegedly attacked at the Meadowlands Racetrack in December, police confirmed.

Louis Buonomo was allegedly pushed to the ground Dec. 3 during an altercation with John Bayiokos, 57, said New Jersey State Police Trooper Lawrence Peele.

Buonomo suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital, police said. He died of his injuries Dec. 15 at Hackensack University Medical Center, Peele said.

Bayiokos was sent to the Bergen County Jail on $250,000 bail, police said. He was released after posting $100,000 bail Dec. 5, NJ.com reported.

It is unknown if the aggravated assault charge against Baiyokos will be upgraded. A spokesperson with Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said the case is still under investigation and pending presentation to the Grand Jury.

Bayiokos is due to appear before Judge Susan Steele in Bergen County Superior Court Feb. 21, police said.

Buonomo owned Lou’s 9W Sunoco gas station in Englewood Cliffs for more than 30 years and several others in Fort Lee and Englewood Cliffs, his obituary on Legacy.com states.
