Face To Face With Marc Mastropietro

Freshman wrestler/track and fielder puts in the practice, coach says

Meet Marc Mastropietro. Though just a freshman, this wrestler/track and fielder is quickly rising to join the ranks of the upper echelon of Aviator athletes, and there does not seem to be a limit to how much he can accomplish.

“Marc is the type of guy who’s always ready to practice, always willing to do what it takes to improve himself,” said Aviator wrestling head coach Craig Massery. “He’s a kid that always wants to improve himself, and this shows in the way he trains.”

The results also show in the way Mastropietro wrestled this season. Though his wrestling experience had been limited to recreational activity, he took the conference by storm, boasting a record of 35-6 (with 15 pins).

The 14-year-old "Mastro," as he’s affectionately referred to by his teammates, credits his older brother, Stephen, who’s on the varsity squad, as keeping him on a strict diet, while adhering to a daily three-hour training regimen.

“There aren’t many days off,” Mastropietro said. “My short-term goal is to make the state placements. That’s why I’m also doing track, to keep in shape and build up my strength.”

Between wrestling and schoolwork (he enjoys math and social studies), the little time he has left to enjoy himself is spent playing videogames, going to the theater and hanging out at the mall.

“I’m used to being active, but I still enjoy relaxing and being a kid,” Mastropietro said.
