Male Hookers Arrested At Bergen Hotel: Police

Detectives discovered the men after seeing Guy Smith, 24, 'acting suspicious' in the lobby, police said.

Police officers on patrol at a Bergen County hotel arrested two male prostitutes, and another man wanted in New York state, police said.

Mahwah Detective Eric Larsen and Detective Sgt. Kevin Hebert saw 24-year-old Guy Smith acting suspiciously in the hotel lobby, said Police Chief James N. Batelli.

Smith's clothes smelled of burnt marijuana and he later admitted smoking the drug, the chief said.

Detectives investigated and discovered that Smith had a parole violation issued against him from the New York State Department of Corrections, despite the fact that he gave them a fake Social Security number, Batelli said.

While police were arresting Smith, his boyfriend, Jante Smith, 21, of Brooklyn, New York, arrived at the lobby and asked why police were arresting his boyfriend, the chief said.

While speaking with Jante Smith, police saw drug paraphernalia in his purse and he was arrested too, police said.

During the subsequent investigation, police determined that Smith and Smith were sharing a room with Jacob Peynado, 23, of Brooklyn, New York, Batelli said. Peynado fled the hotel when he saw Smith and Smith being arrested, police later found him at a nearby restaurant, he said.

Police smelled burnt marijuana on Peynado, who admitted he had some of the drug and some paraphernalia; he also admitted that he and Jante Smith were prostitutes who were using the hotel to see clients, Batelli said.

Guy Smith was charged with possession of marijuana and providing false information to police; he was taken to the Bergen County Jail pending extradition to New York.

Jante Smith was charged with cocaine possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and engaging in prostitution, police said. He was released pending a May 19 court appearance.

Peynado was charged with marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and engaging in prostitution. He was released pending a May 19 court appearance.

"The community policing functions performed by the detectives serve a dual purpose in maintaining a visible presence and deterring crime in the community," Batelli said.
