Principal Brinker Gets Kids to 'Reach' for a Book at Home

Lincoln School Read-A-Thon is in full swing all this month

Lesa Brinker, principal of Lincoln Elementary School, continuously encourages students to read inside the classroom and all this month she has been implementing a way to encourage them to keep reading at home through the Lincoln School Read-A-Thon initiative.

All throughout May, Brinker has been calling students at home to find out if she can "catch them in the act" of reading. If she finds a student in the act she will award he or she with a REACH award the next day and take their picture. The REACH awards stand for  Relationship, Example, Applause, Confidence and Hard Work.

The kids are very excited about the idea, Brinker said. She said they want to know when she is going to call and continue to ask if it will be on the weekend or in the evenings. It’s really encouraged to the kids to read at home in the hopes that their principal will call when they are in the middle of a story.
