Principal Forte Brings College Fair Back to Hasbrouck Heights High School

Parents and students take advantage of the opportunity

For the first time in more than 15 years Hasbrouck Heights High School hosted a college fair.  Representatives from more than 20 colleges and trade schools from the tri-state area were on hand to speak to parents and students about the programs they offer, financial aid, and campus life.

The fair included a wide variety of higher education options including local smaller institutions like Berkeley, Ramapo and Caldwell Colleges to the larger New Jersey schools like Rutgers and NJIT. Local community collages and technical institutions such as Lincoln Tech and Parisian Beauty Academy were also represented.

“I am new here and I thought that bringing back the college fair would be a great change” said Principal Steven Forte. “It was done years ago and I really don’t know why they stopped.”

He continued, “Providing students an opportunity to speak to college representatives in an informal setting is very important. Most college fairs are pretty intimidating. This has a really great feel.”

With 90 percent of Hasbrouck Heights High School graduates going on to higher education, the event was well attended by not only students with their parents, but students alone. Haleigh Machtemes and Lauren Robertson were two students attending on their own.

“I am looking for a school that is not too far from home and there are a lot of good choices here” said Robertson, who is considering a psychology major in college. She was glad to be able to speak with college representatives without having to travel to a large college fair.

All attendees left with armloads of information, including a list of scholarships available to Hasbrouck Heights seniors who have been accepted to an accredited 2 or 4 year college, business, trade, or vocational school.
