Sports Wrap Up: Messery Takes Home County Tennis Title, Boys Soccer Team Rebounds
Highlights of recent games and this week's game schedule
Tennis
Junior Nina Messery accomplished something for the record books on Sunday.
Messery fulfilled what many in the Bergen County tennis community felt she could do by winning the county Small Schools' first singles title with a dominating 6-0, 6-3 victory over Simona Levsky of Leonia on Sunday morning at Old Tappan High School.
The junior tennis player was the top seed in the first singles for the small schools and became the first Heights girls tennis player to win a first singles Bergen championship in several decades.
Actually for Messery, the semi-final contest was a tougher draw as she defeated Dwight Englewood's Lauren Urbont, 6-4, 7-5. Overall the Lady Aviators team was fifth in team scoring with seven points. The team title was won by Dwight-Englewood with 18 points.
The other Heights players who made the county semi-finals were the second doubles team of senior Megan Sharkey and junior Jiulliana Nass who lost 6-3, 6-0 to Rachel Kupelian and Sydney Taub of Dwight-Englewood.
Senior Marianne Lim made it to the quarterfinals of the third singles before losing to Park Ridge's Karolina Golabek while the first doubles team of senior Christine Le and junior Merideth Stroud also lost in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0 to Margaux Grober and Janan Fugal of Saddle River Day. Senior Jen Cheng lost in the first round of the second singles in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Danielle Miller of Saddle River Day.
The Heights team goes back to work on Tuesday against New Milford. The Aviators are 5-0 heading into the contest with the Green Knights.
Boys soccer
The Hasbrouck Heights squad (4-1) has rebounded nicely since the opening contest with Wallington. The Aviators lost a controversial 3-2 contest against the Panthers on the road on a penalty shot in the last couple of minutes.
But Heights has rebounded with four straight victories including a 6-0 drubbing of Manchester at home. Tyler Nascimento led the way with two goals while John Robel, Thomas Blo, Kyle Lopez and Gabe Toledo added a goal each. The Aviators were ahead 4-0 by halftime to control the game.
Heights has a tough matchup with Harrison at home on Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Tide is perennial powerhouse in the state especially in Group 1.
Girls soccer
The Lady Aviators stayed undefeated for the season as they defeated a quality team in Lyndhurst, 3-2, at home on Thursday night in a North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands crossover game.
The Lady Aviators jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime and held on against the Lady Golden Bears. Jodee Giarratana scored a goal and assisted on the two other scores to lead Hasbrouck Heights. Joelle Tondi and Kristen Delcalzo had a goal each for the Lady Aviators.
Heights will be tested on Monday as they travel to Secaucus.
Football
Hasbrouck Heights running tandem of Mike Pikowski and Anthony Seidel led the Aviators to the rivalry victory, 47-6, over Wood-Ridge.
Pikowski collected 110 yards including an 89-yard touchdown run and Seidel added 95 yards including two touchdowns to lead the way. The Heights defense gave up only a P.J. Incremona, 33-yard run in the fourth quarter for Wood-Ridge to ruin the shutout attempt. Sophomore quarterback Darren Iurato ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to David Im to back the Aviators.
Heights takes on Wallington on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Depken Field.
