Seven years ago, I left Hasbrouck Heights and moved to Boston, a new city that offers no love for anybody from the New York area. Nonetheless, I found a way to call this city my home while still being a Yankees fan.
In 2013, tragedy hit the city when the Boston Marathon Bombing occurred. As I watched the marathon that year (as I had done every year since my move), I thanked my lucky stars that I was fortunate enough to be a little less than a mile away from the finish line, putting myself out of physical harm’s way. While I was fortunate, many others were not. Since that day, I promised myself that one year soon I would run the Boston Marathon and this year is the year I get to check the box on that.
This year I’m running the Boston Marathon representing Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Stepping Strong Team. The team runs in honor of Gillian Reny, an innocent bystander severely injured during the bombings while watching her sister run the marathon. Thanks to the efforts at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the doctors treating Gillian were able to save her life and both her legs. Her family created the Stepping Strong Fund soon after as a way to raise money to support trauma care and research.
