Vehicle Crashes Into Fence on Burton Avenue, Driver Arrested on DWI Charge

Police pursuit of vehicle began in Garfield.

Three police departments were all in pursuit of a vehicle which refused to stop and was said to have been driving on the wrong side of Route 46, finally stopping when it crashed into a fence and tree on the property of a Burton Avenue home early Wednesday morning, according to .

Lt. Thomas Archer, head of the traffic bureau at the Heights police department, said Kristian Salmeron, of Newark, was arrested on DWI charges by Garfield police officers, who had initiated the chase.

Archer said the pursuit began in Garfield after the vehicle allegedly refused to stop and therefore officers continued to follow into Lodi where they lost site of the vehicle.

Lodi police officers located the vehicle and continued the pursuit. Archer says the driver cut the headlights to avoid being seen then continued on Route 46 where the driver allegedly was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes.

The vehicle finally came to a stop when the driver hit a Mac truck, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fence at 519 Burton Avenue, Archer says. The vehicle also crashed into a tree in the yard and a small retaining wall.

Archer says Salmeron tried to flee on foot but Lodi police officers apprehended him on Charlton Avenue which is on the border of Lodi and Hasbrouck Heights.

Archer says complaints from the HHPD against Salmeron are pending. Garfield police made the arrest and transported Salmeron to the hospital for treatment.
