2 Anti-Racism Events To Be Held In Flemington

The Meta Theatre Company (MTC), a Hunterdon County-based group, will be performing at both events on Oct. 24 and Nov. 9.

FLEMINGTON, NJ — Two anti-discrimination-themed events will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24 and Thursday, Nov. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Stangl Stage in Flemington NJ.

Progressive Hunterdon Democrats (PHD), Indivisible Garden State Values (IGSV) and the Hunterdon County Anti-Racism Coalition (HCARC) are co-sponsoring the series.

On Oct. 24 there will be an interactive performance by The Meta Theatre Company (MTC), a Hunterdon County-based group that invites audience members to join them onstage in improvisational role-playing around social justice issues. Their work is in collaboration with a group of women incarcerated at The Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Clinton.

"Theatre is a pathway to justice," says Caroline Hann, MTC's co-artistic director. "We hope that after watching and taking part in a performance, people will feel empowered to create social change in their communities."

After the performance, Hann and the cast will lead a candid group discussion around racial and economic justice in Hunterdon County.

The second event on Nov. 9 will be a workshop on racism and practical ways to fight against it in everyday life.

The MTC cast will be back to moderate a follow-up discussion; after this will be a primer on what implicit bias is and how it manifests (led by Catherine Riihimaki of IGSV), personal stories of racial discrimination in Hunterdon County (moderated by Roia Rafieyan of PHD and the HCARC) and a small-group discussion around more concrete actions people can take as individuals and in groups (moderated by Alexa Offenhauer from the HCARC).
