2 Men Indicted For Murder, Robbery Of Franklin Man

The men were charged after Artis Young, 46, was found dead in New York City in December 2023.

FRANKLIN, NJ — A Somerset County Grand Jury returned indictments on Thursday against two men in connection to the murder of Artis Young, 46, in Franklin Township in December 2023, announced Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

Daniel Matthews, 44, of Schroeders Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, and Andrew Mumby, 47, of Remsen Avenue, New Brunswick were indicted with first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy to disturb human remains, second-degree disturbing human remains, and two counts of third-degree hindering apprehension.

Matthews and Mumby remain lodged in Somerset County Jail.

On Dec. 30, 2023, at around 6:23 p.m., Franklin Township Police Department received a missing person report from a family member regarding Young.

The family reported Young was last seen on Dec. 29, 2023. Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department initiated an investigation into the whereabouts of Young and determined that Young had plans to meet with Matthews in Franklin Township on Dec. 29.

During the early morning hours of Dec. 30, 2023, Young was found dead in Brooklyn, New York, said McDonald.

Once his identification was made, Franklin Township Police Department detectives were notified by detectives from the New York Police Department of Artis Young’s death. An autopsy was conducted by the New York State Regional Medical Examiner’s Office which ruled the manner of Young’s death as homicide.

An investigation identified Mumby and Matthews as suspects in the death of Young.

Mumby was arrested on Feb. 7, in New Brunswick without incident and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree disturbing or desecrating human remains, second-degree conspiracy to disturb or desecrate human remains, third-degree hindering prosecution and third-degree hindering the prosecution of another.

On March 12, Matthews was arrested in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by the Philadelphia Police Department without incident. Matthews was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree disturbing or desecrating human remains, second-degree conspiracy to disturb or desecrate human remains, third-degree hindering prosecution and third-degree hindering the prosecution of another.
