24 Hillsborough Students, Teachers Cut Hair For Wigs For Kids

About 276 inches of hair was donated to a non-profit organization that makes hairpieces for children who suffer from hair loss.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A total of 19 students, two teachers, two former students, and one parent from the Amsterdam Elementary School community chopped off their locks to donate to children in need.

Their hair was donated on June 1 to Wigs for Kids, a nonprofit organization that makes hairpieces for children who suffer from hair loss.

This is the 15th year that Amsterdam School has held this hair cutting celebration. In addition to providing about 276 inches of hair to this non-profit organization, this year the school community also raised $1,100 in monetary donations.

The monetary donations were collected through a hair extension fundraiser. Local Hillsborough salon, Hair Plus, donated their time to not only the hair extension fund raiser where they bonded pink or red extensions to the hair of students and staff, but they also did the haircuts on June 1.

The annual school ceremony started more than 15 years ago as an intimate ceremony in the classroom of 4th grade teacher Lisa Caudill. That year, Caudill’s class provided support and encouragement to her as she grew her hair, cut it, and donated it. Now, Caudill organizes the program every year for Amsterdam School. Since Caudill’s first ceremony in her classroom, the school has donated nearly 7,500 inches of hair.
