"The FIFA World Cup 2026 is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase New Jersey on the global stage," Gov. Mikie Sherrill said.

The county said the grants will be used to expand local events connected to the tournament and bring fan experiences to Somerset County residents.

"With this funding, we are able to expand local events so that no one needs to miss out on the excitement. There are going to be so many amazing opportunities to celebrate, to be active in our communities, and to experience the soccer frenzy right in your backyard. Additionally, these home-grown events will help our small businesses continue to thrive throughout the summer," Somerset County Commissioner Director Shanel Y. Robinson said.

Basking Ridge

One of the funded events is The Battle of Basking Ridge Soccer Village & Viewing Party, set for June 13, in Bernards Township.

Mayor Ana Duarte McCarthy said, "Bernards Township is honored to be one of two municipalities in Somerset County selected to receive funding through the World Cup Community Initiative."

"Celebrating the World Cup, nearly 100 years old, and our nation’s 250th Anniversary, creates a unique opportunity to convene residents and visitors from around the world in our historic community," Duarte McCarthy added.

Hillsborough

The second event is a World Cup Watch Party & Cultural Festival on June 27, in Hillsborough.

It will be hosted in partnership with the Somerset County Business Partnership and Iron Peak Sports & Events.

Piers Giles, general manager of Iron Peak Sports & Events, said the grant is part of the lead-up to the tournament and called the investment one that reaches beyond the venue to the broader community and local businesses.
