Kean Secures $975K To Upgrade Outdated Hillsborough Police Radio System

Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. secured the $975,000 in federal funding for Hillsborough Township.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Congressman Tom Kean Jr. has secured $975,000 for a public safety communications upgrade in Hillsborough Township.

The Hillsborough federal funding request is among 18 projects included in House funding bills for the upcoming fiscal year, according to Kean, Jr., who represents New Jersey's 7th Congressional District.

Kean's office said the Hillsborough project would fund modernization and replacement of outdated portable radio communications equipment used by the Hillsborough Township Police Department.

According to the project justification, the funding would support the procurement and deployment of 75 all-band portable radios with interoperability, Wi-Fi connectivity and LTE capabilities.

Community Project Funding allows members of Congress to request direct funding for projects that benefit the communities they represent.

The announcement also said only projects with evidence of strong community support are considered, and that evidence of support and community need is required as part of the submission.

"I fought to bring this federal funding home to New Jersey because our communities deserve a strong return on the tax dollars they send to Washington," said Kean.

He added, "These investments will improve roads and bridges, modernize water infrastructure, strengthen public safety, support our first responders, and help towns complete critical projects without placing the full burden on local property taxpayers. My focus will continue to be listening to residents, cutting through the Washington gridlock, and delivering resources that make our communities safer, stronger, and more affordable."

The next step is for the bills to pass the House. If approved, the Hillsborough project would move forward with federal support as part of the upcoming fiscal year spending process.
