HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Somerset County residents can dispose of personal documents at a free Operation Secure Shred event on Saturday in Hillsborough.
The drive-up shredding service is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Somerset County Public Works Garage, South County Facility, 410 Roycefield Road.
The county said the event will be held rain or shine, but it could end before 1 p.m. if the trucks reach full capacity.
Somerset County described Operation Secure Shred as a popular recycling event and asked residents for patience if long lines or longer wait times develop.
Residents from all 21 Somerset County municipalities may attend, regardless of which town is hosting, according to the announcement.
No pre-registration is required, but participants must show proof of residency, such as a current driver's license, valid lease, tax bill or another document with a Somerset County address.
Businesses and commercial vehicles are not allowed.
Participants may bring up to six boxes, containers or bags of paper for shredding. Staples and paper clips can stay in place.
The county said junk mail, magazines and newspapers will not be accepted. Residents are asked to unload their own materials and take back empty receptacles, though staff will be available to help if needed.
The county said the program is intended to help residents protect personal information and reduce the risk of identity theft.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, documents containing personal information should be shredded before disposal to prevent theft.
The county listed examples including medical records, tax information, bank statements and documents showing Social Security numbers.
The Federal Trade Commission also recommends keeping paystubs, bank statements and paid, undisputed medical bills for up to one year.
The county said keeping those documents for that period can help with budgeting, resolving discrepancies or verifying payments.
