Senior Center Expansion Planned In Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A "bigger, better, awesome" senior center is being planned in Hillsborough, Mayor Catherine Payne shared.

At the Aug. 25 Committee meeting, Payne said Somerset County purchased 2.5 acres next to the area of the existing senior center in Hillsborough at 339 S Branch Road.

Committeeman Robert Britting Jr. said the land sits next door to the existing senior center area, creating an opportunity to expand the center's footprint for seniors.

Payne said the existing center is too crowded for current demand.

"I think most of you are familiar with where the YMCA is. Across the street from that is a small senior center that the county uses right now, and we are woefully busting at the seams at that center," said Payne.

The county is buying the land next to that property and Payne described the expected result as "an even bigger, better, awesome senior center."

"We're very excited for them and for our citizens who get to use it as well," said Payne.

Britting said the purchase connects to other senior-related work that is still underway in the Township.

"Stay tuned for all of that because it's a very serious issue that we're all taking very seriously," said Britting.

He also said committee members have been working with social services and community groups on efforts tied to the township's senior population.

Britting cited the Foothill Acres group's $10,000 donation and thanked local organizations and businesses for supporting seniors.
