HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The entire Hillsborough Bypass will close to traffic on Saturday, Sept. 26, for The Chase, a 5K race.
This will be only the second time the full bypass has closed for the event.
The race is designed as a fast, out-and-back 5K with one turn.
The straightaway course is intended to help both elite runners and first-time racers pursue personal bests. The 2026 race will also serve as a 5K Championship for USA Track & Field NJ.
Organizers said $5,000 in prize money will be available, and six random participants will each win $100.
The event description says the race is expected to draw regional talent along with local runners of varying experience levels.
The Chase also serves as a fundraising platform for local charities. Participants can register as individuals, form teams or sign up as fundraisers for causes they support.
Causes include Hillsborough PBA, Hillsborough Fire Company #2, Steps Together, Live Like Linda, MTA Foundation, CASA SHaW and Steeplechase Cancer Center @ RWJUH Somerset.
"This is your chance to be part of something historic," organizers said. "Lace up. Line up."
The race has expanded from its first year and now welcomes anyone who can finish a 5K in 60 minutes. The event also adds a master's award for runners age 40 and older.
Course records included in the event information are 14:51.0 for men, held by Issame El jazouli, and 16:59.3 for women, held by Marissa Coombs.
The event is presented with support from Newman Racing, Flounder Brewing and Cadence, all Hillsborough-based businesses.
After the race, participants will receive a beverage ticket for a post-race celebration hosted by Flounder Brewing. The ticket includes a soft pretzel and a drink.
Registration is $45, with a $3 discount for USATF members. Runners can register, donate or volunteer at racethechase.com.
