HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — In the fast-paced world of New Jersey scholastic athletics, winning games is often considered the primary benchmark of success. Longtime Hillsborough High School (HHS) head coach Cheryl Iaione has certainly proven she can win with the best of them, but those who have played for her know the scoreboard tells only part of the story. Her real legacy is etched in the character, discipline, and unity she instills in her student-athletes year after year.
For three decades, Iaione has served as the anchor of the Raiders softball program. Since taking over in 1995, she has built Hillsborough into a perennial state power, amassing a decorated résumé that places her among the elite coaches in Somerset County history. Along the way, she joined the rare and prestigious 500 career-win club, captured multiple Somerset County Tournament crowns, and secured several Skyland Conference and sectional titles — a run of sustained excellence that has become the standard for what Hillsborough softball is supposed to look like.
A Standard for Everyone
At the core of Iaione's program is a simple but unyielding philosophy: discipline and accountability apply to every player, every day. One of her defining standards is punctuality — if you're on time, you're already late; if you're 15 minutes early, you're on time. It's a small rule with an outsized purpose, instilling the kind of self-discipline and personal accountability that Iaione believes matters as much as anything that happens between the lines. For her, softball has always been a vehicle for building habits that carry far beyond the diamond.
Win No. 500 — and a Place in Skyland History
That standard reached a new milestone when Iaione notched the 500th win of her coaching career, powered by a three-hit shutout of Monroe. Pitcher Emma Anderson handled the shutout duties in the circle, while Gwen Gizzi and Addison Whitney supplied the clutch hitting that sealed the milestone win. The achievement made Iaione just the third coach in Skyland Conference softball history to reach 500 career victories — a club that places her in rarefied company among the best to ever coach in the conference.
State Recognition
Iaione's impact has reached beyond the diamond and into Trenton. NJ Senator Andrew Zwicker, Assemblyman Roy Freiman and Assemblywoman Mitchelle Drulis obtained a New Jersey State proclamation honoring Coach Iaione's leadership and her longstanding commitment to Hillsborough High School's student-athletes — a formal recognition of the standard she has set for the program and the community over more than two decades. A Program Built for the State Stage
Iaione's teams haven't just piled up regular-season wins — they've consistently pushed deep into New Jersey's post-season tournaments:
A Legacy Recognized
Beyond the state proclamation, Iaione's impact on Hillsborough athletics has been formally recognized with her induction into the Hillsborough High School Hall of Fame as the program's softball coach — a distinction reserved for those who've shaped the school's athletic identity for generations of student-athletes. Also, in 2015, she was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association (NJSCA) Hall of Fame.
The Program She Built
Heading into this season, the Raiders remain one of the top teams in the Skyland Conference, sitting at 24-3 overall with a perfect 8-0 conference record and a #20 NJSIAA state ranking, averaging 6.1 runs scored per game against just 1.5 allowed. And she and her team finished in 2026 ranked 8th in the state. It's a snapshot of the culture Iaione has spent more than twenty years building: disciplined, unified, and built to win — but never only about winning.
