MONTGOMERY, NJ — Montgomery residents were awakened by smoke and fire inside their home overnight on Monday.
At 10:47 p.m., Montgomery Police, Montgomery Fire Companies 1 and 2 and Montgomery EMS went to a single-family home on the 300 block of County Route 601 for a fire.
The homeowners discovered heavy smoke in the home after waking up, and both were able to evacuate, said Montgomery Police Lt. Jason Larsen.
Both residents were treated by Montgomery EMS and taken to Penn Medicine Princeton Hospital for smoke inhalation.
The residents' dog died in the fire, said Larsen.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. However, an initial investigation found it appears the fire had started in a living room with a space heater, said Larsen.
Due to several lithium batteries found in the home, Somerset County HazMat was called.
In addition to the Montgomery Fire Companies, additional fire departments from Rocky Hill, Hillsborough, Hopewell, and Millstone Valley came to help, along with Robert Wood Johnson EMS.
The home was left uninhabitable following the fire.
The Montgomery Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 is comprised of friends, family and neighbors. They are always looking for new members to join. Stop by the station at 529 County Route 518 in Skillman any Wednesday at 7 p.m. to learn more.
