HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The mayor and Hillsborough Township Committee have recognized Oct. 28 as National First Responders Day in the township.A
At the Oct. 13 Township Committee meeting, Deputy Mayor Shawn Lipani presented a proclamation that says first responders are "the backbone of community safety and emergency response," and describes them as people who are "standing ready to run toward danger when crisis strikes whether in natural disasters, accidents, medical emergencies, or public health and safety threats."
Hillsborough's first responders include career and volunteer firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, 911 dispatchers and emergency management personnel.
Those workers and volunteers protect residents during some of the community's most difficult moments.
The proclamation also recognizes the personal cost of that service.
It says these "dedicated men and women display profound courage, selflessness, and resilience," and notes that they are "often missing moments with their own families to protect ours."
The document further states that many first responders "have suffered injury or made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty," and says they leave behind "a legacy of supreme devotion to the public welfare."
"It is fitting and proper that we express our deep gratitude and respect for those who answer the call in our darkest and most challenging hours," according to the proclamation.
