Belle Mead Man, Doctor Admits Illegally Giving Out Steroids

BELLE MEAD, NJ — A doctor admitted to unlawfully giving out prescriptions for steroids for beauty and fitness enhancements and for preparing marijuana products in his Belle Mead kitchen, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Kevin Custis, 53, of Belle Mead pleaded guilty before Judge Peter G. Sheridan in Trenton federal court to an information charging him with one count of distributing anabolic steroids and one count of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute.

Custis who has offices in Asbury Park and Brooklyn, New York wrote and delivered numerous prescriptions for various types of anabolic steroids to two patients in 2016 and 2017, according to documents filed in this case and statements in court.

He admitted that he knew these prescriptions were not for the treatment of any actual medical condition, but were solely for muscle enhancement, beauty, and muscle building and fitness competitions, according to the report.

A search of his Belle Mead home on June 14, 2017 Drug Enforcement Agency officers found more than four kilograms of marijuana and more than 150 grams of tetrahydrocannobinal oil.

Custis admitted that he intended to distribute these substances and that he prepared marijuana products for patients in his home kitchen, according to Carpenito.

Custis could face 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine on the count of distributing anabolic steroids and a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the count of possessing marijuana.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 9.
