Cat Stuck In Tree Rescued By Firefighters In Somerset County

The volunteer firefighters were able to rescue the cat ahead of the torrential rain on Monday night.

MONTGOMERY, NJ — Just like in the movies, a cat stuck in a tree was rescued by volunteer firefighters in Montgomery on Monday ahead of the torrential rain.

In the morning on Sunday, June 11, SAVE, A Friend to Homeless Animals became aware a male cat from their outdoor feral cat colony was in the tree, said SAVE Executive Director Heather Achenbach to Patch.

"We knew he was in the tree because he is a very vocal cat. We could also see him the entire time as the tree was a few yards beyond our exterior fence. We gave him 24 hours to come down on his own."

Knowing he had not had food or water and the weather forecast indicated torrential rain in the evening, SAVE called Montgomery Animal Control and the Montgomery Volunteer Fire #2 in Skillman around 11:30 a.m. on June 12 to ask if they could help.

The cat was rescued and brought to SAVE at 1010 Route 601 in Skillman within an hour of their call, said Achenbach.

"The cat was assisted out of the tree safely and brought back into the shelter for food, water, and examination by our veterinarian. He will be returned to the colony after he is medically cleared," said Achenbach.

Founded in 1941, SAVE is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit animal shelter dedicated to protecting the health and welfare of homeless companion animals in the greater Princeton area.
