Cedar Hill Prep's Art Show Proves the Answer Starts in the Classroom

Walk into Cedar Hill Preparatory School's gymnasium on any given school day and you'll find a basketball court. Walk in on the evening of May 21, and you found something else entirely — a gallery.

Hundreds of original works lined freestanding panels and stretched across walls of deep blue, each piece labeled with a name and a grade. The annual Art Show drew families, students, and community members to the Somerset school for an evening that felt less like a school event and more like an opening night.

The self-portrait collections alone could have filled an evening. Kindergarteners worked in bold black line against luminous, watercolor-washed backgrounds, their faces emerging from clouds of pink, yellow, and blue. Elsewhere, mixed-media portraits incorporated patterned papers and deliberate color palettes, the works growing in complexity and likeness in ways that stopped more than a few parents mid-step.

Sixth graders tackled architectural perspective drawing, producing interior room designs with vanishing points, receding floor lines, and furnishings in careful proportion. Student Isra Arif's piece — a fully realized bedroom interior complete with pendant lights, a swing chair, and artwork on the walls — drew particular attention for its spatial confidence and detail.

Second graders brought the animal kingdom to life in a series of feline paintings, each cat rendered with its own personality — one regal and sun-drenched, another wide-eyed amid tropical foliage, another improbably sporting a unicorn horn.

What made the evening more than a display was the conversation happening in front of the work. Students explained their choices, described their process, and debated whether they were happy with how things turned out. The questions being asked were the same ones artists have always asked each other.
