Young Child Dies In Locked, Hot Car In Somerset County: Report

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office confirmed a young child died in Franklin Township. A report says the child was left in a hot car.

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ — Law enforcement are investigating after a young child died in Franklin Township, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office.

Officials have not released the child's exact age, gender, or where the death happened. News12 reports the child was "found unattended" in a locked car on Summerall Road around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The prosecutor's office sent a statement to media shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The full statement from Deputy Chief Frank Roman is as follows: "Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office along with Franklin Township Police are actively investigating a child fatality which occurred within the jurisdiction of Franklin Township (Somerset County) New Jersey. Authorities have notified the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office who will be responding to conduct the investigation. No further details will be released at this time while investigators conduct their investigation."
