Driver Killed After Car Veers Off Road Into Utility Pole In Somerset County

The car's only occupant was a 68-year-old North Brunswick resident, said police.

FRANKLIN, NJ — A North Brunswick driver was killed after the car went off the road and crashed into a utility pole in Franklin Township on Monday morning, said police.

On June 26 at 11:22 a.m., the Franklin Township Police Department received a 911 call reporting a single motor vehicle crash, involving a vehicle off the road into a utility pole, in the area of Route 27 and Bennington Parkway, said Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor, and Franklin Township Public Safety Director Quovella M. Maeweather.

The preliminary investigation found that a 2016 Toyota Corolla was driving southbound on Route 27 south of Bennington Parkway and went off the road right, impacting a utility pole, said police.

The vehicle’s sole occupant, a 68-year-old North Brunswick resident, was treated at the scene by EMS for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to RWJBH-New Brunswick for medical evaluation.

The Franklin Township Police Department was contacted by RWJBH staff who advised that the driver was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m. The cause of death is pending.

The factors that contributed to the crash are currently under investigation by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team and the Franklin Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau.

The decedent’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
