Duke Farms Education Manager Selected for 2017 National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship

Award Winning Educator to Embark on Global Expedition for Hands-On Professional Development

WASHINGTON (April 5, 2017)— Tanya Sulikowski from Duke Farms in Hillsborough, New Jersey, has been selected as one of this year’s Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows. The 2017 Fellows, a group of 35 highly respected educators from the United States and Canada, will embark on global expeditions onboard the Lindblad expedition ships—National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Endeavour ll and National Geographic Sea Lion—for a hands-on experience for professional development.

Each year, pre-K–12 educators are encouraged to apply for this one-of-a-kind professional development opportunity. Fellows enhance their geographic learning through direct, hands-on field experience and bring that knowledge back to their classrooms and professional communities.

Tanya Sulikowski, a 2017 Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow, is the Manager of Programs at Duke Farms in Hillsborough, New Jersey. She also serves as the Vice President of the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education and was the 2016 recipient of the Conserve Wildlife Foundation’s Women and Wildlife Award for Education. Her true passion is getting students outdoors and inspiring them to discover their connections to the natural world.

Starting later this year, the Fellows will begin their 10- to 17-day expeditions to locations including the Canadian High Arctic, Antarctica, Southeast Alaska, Arctic Svalbard, Iceland, Greenland and Galápagos Islands. Accompanied by Lindblad-National Geographic expedition experts, ranging from undersea specialists to National Geographic photographers, the Fellows will experience landscapes, cultures and wildlife unique to their regions of exploration. The excursions will educationally immerse the Fellows in learning and give them new knowledge to bring back to their local classrooms and professional communities.

Before their voyages, the Fellows traveled to National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., where they participated in hands-on, pre-expedition workshops covering photography and outreach planning and had the opportunity to network with Lindblad Expeditions naturalists and past Fellows.

This year marks the 11th year of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program, established to honor former National Geographic Society Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor’s lifetime commitment to geographic education. Onboard expedition accommodations for this program were donated by Sven-Olof Lindblad and Lindblad Expeditions in 2006 to commemorate Grosvenor’s 75th birthday and honor his service to the enhancement and advancement of geographic education.
