Dumpster Fire, Possible Frozen Water Rescue Keep Hillsborough Firefighters, Police Busy

It was a busy weekend for Hillsborough firefighters and police officers.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — It was a busy weekend for Hillsborough firefighters and police after being called out for a rescue of two people trapped under a frozen pond and a dumpster fire.

Water rescue

On Friday, Feb. 11 at about 7:20 p.m., Hillsborough police and fire department 36 and 37 were called to Ann Van Middlesworth Park for a report that two people were heard calling for help and could possibly be under the ice, according to Hillsborough Twp Station 37 Fire.

The fire station 37 then called Station 56 dive team, Somerset County Prosecutors Dive Team, Station 28 for the drone, Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas additional bus, and New Jersey State Police NorthStar for help.

However, before the dive and aviation units were sent out authorities located the two people.

"It turned out to be a misunderstanding," said Hillsborough Police Lt. Mark Szymanski. "The area was searched with negative findings and it turned out that it was juveniles fishing. No rescue was performed."

Dumpster Fire

On Sunday, Feb. 13 at about 8:35 p.m., Hillsborough police, fire and rescue went to the parking lot of 521 Andria Ave. for a reported dumpster fire.

The fire is still under investigation but the initial investigation revealed that it appears accidental in nature, said Szymanski.

No damage aside for the dumpster was reported.
