Flash Flood Watch In Effect For Somerset County

Showers and scattered thunderstorms will develop bringing heavy rain with rainfall amounts of more than 1 inch in an hour are possible.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A flash flood watch is in effect for Somerset County through Thursday at 6 a.m., the National Weather Service announced.

Showers and scattered thunderstorms will develop Wednesday and continue into tonight bringing heavy rain with rainfall amounts of more than 1 inch in an hour are possible, the NWS reported.

The NWS warned that excessive rainfall within a short period of time can lead to rapidly rising water and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas and along small creeks and streams.

Here is a look at the upcoming forecase, according to the NWS:

Wednesday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 81. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Patchy fog. Low around 70. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 7 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., then a chance of showers after 3 p.m. Patchy fog before 9 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. Light west wind. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers before 9 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Friday: A chance of showers between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
