Former Addict Will Share Story To Hillsborough Students, Parents

Michael DeLeon​ will speak to Hillsborough students and parents about his personal experience with substance abuse and addiction on Jan. 31.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A former addict, Michael DeLeon, will speak to Hillsborough students and parents about his personal experience with substance abuse and addiction.

On Jan. 31, DeLeon will speak to the Hillsborough High School sophomore class as part of the Steered Straight presentation. A second presentation will be held at 7 p.m. for parents and students (ages 12 and older) in the Hillsborough High School auditorium.

DeLeon will talk about his personal eight-year battle with drug addiction and gang involvement. He also spent 12 years in state prison and halfway houses for a gang-related homicide.

He is hoping by speaking about his past it will help steer students from making the same poor mistakes. He is also hoping help inform parents and community members of current drug and alcohol trends in the community as well as how to engage children and young adults in constructive conversation regarding these difficult topics.

Steered Straight is being presented by the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Safe Coalition of Hunterdon and Somerset, Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance, Hillsborough Life Skills, and Steered Straight.
