Gunman Charged In 'Mistaken Identity' Shooting Of RVCC Student

FRANKLIN, NJ — A Raritan Valley Community College student who was shot and killed in October may have not been the intended victim, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson. Kerron Parker, 19, of Franklin Boulevard, in Franklin Township has been charged in connection with the death of Monserrat Noyola-Narvaez, 20, of Home Street, Franklin Township. Police believe Noyola-Narvaez was not Parker's intended target when she was shot in her car on Phillips Road.

A 911 call reported the shooting and a car stopped on Oct. 22, 2019 at about 7:20 p.m. on Phillips Road in the area of Matilda Avenue in Somerset, Robertson said.

Noyola-Narvaez was the driver in a car and found unconscious behind the wheel and shot, authorities said.

She was taken to an area trauma center and listed in critical condition. She later died from her injuries on Oct. 24, 2019. Noyola-Narvaez’ organs were donated to the NJ Sharing Network by her family following her death, Robertson said.

Monserrat was attending Raritan Valley Community College, where she was in the nursing program. She was a "loved daughter, sister and aunt," according to a GoFundMe set up in her name. "She was shot in Somerset three times while she was sitting in her car on Oct. 22, 2019 where her car was mistaken for another car. She fought hard but unfortunately passed away."

An autopsy determined Noyola-Narvaez died from the gunshot wound and her death was deemed a homicide on Oct. 28, 2019.

Parker was arrested following a two-and-a half-month investigation, charged with first-degree murder and taken to the Middlesex County Jail. Parker will remain in jail pending a detention hearing.
