High School Juniors... It's Your Turn!

Now that most seniors have submitted their college applications, high school counselors are starting to work with the junior class – so move to the front of the line.  Touch base with your counselor, helping him/her to really get to know you so that the counselor recommendation letter that is ultimately written on your behalf (it’s part of The Common App) will be personal and convey a real sense of who you are and what you’ve accomplished.

Your counselor is a great resource of information….so ask the questions that are on your mind. If you have some idea of the characteristics that you are seeking in your ideal college, discuss this with your counselor and you will likely end up getting a list of potential colleges that you can start visiting as time allows.  What about your course schedule for next year?  If you share your interests and passions with your counselor, he/she will likely recommend (and help you get into!) the perfect elective, whether it be photography, journalism, webpage design, or whatever course would help you get some real experience for a potential college major.

Your counselor can also help you come up with a plan for when you will take your S.A.T. exams.  Should you start in January (the late registration deadline is coming up soon!) or March, or wait until May or June?  Don’t forget to prepare for the S.A.T., as it is a very predictable test with lots of study material available at bookstores.  (Doing College Board’s online “Question of the Day” is admirable, but not nearly sufficient practice for this all-important exam!)  If you would like to be coached on the strategies and secrets of the S.A.T., and guided through several College Board-written tests, check out local and affordable courses that S.A.T. Smart has been offering for the past 20 years.  Visit www.SATsmart.com  Make the most of your junior year and get on the right track for a successful transition to college!
