Hillsborough Buys Four New Police Cars

Police Department to get Ford Interceptor SUVs

Hillsborough, NJ -- The Hillsborough Police Department will soon have four new marked vehicles to add to their fleet.

The Mayor and Council voted on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to authorize the purchase of four marked police vehicles for no more than $144,000, through the Cranford Police Cooperative pricing system.

The Ford Interceptor SUVs are in the process of being ordered. After delivery they will be marked in black and white and outfitted with the necessary police equipment. The vehicles are expected to hit the streets of Hillsborough sometime within the first quarter of the new year, according to acting Police Chief Darren Powell.

Currently, the department has 24 marked patrol vehicles. The new vehicles will take the place of the four oldest cars on the force.

“To maintain a safe, operational fleet we have to get the vehicles into a cycle,” Powell said. “Our guys are in the vehicle for 12 hours a day. We have to make sure the vehicles are up to date.”

Older vehicles will serve a new life as:

  • working on roadside jobs;
  • or getting painted a solid color to serve as an administrative vehicle for non-emergency matters;
  • or painted a solid color and given to other township departments to use.
