Hillsborough Democrats Award Two Scholarships to Hillsborough Seniors
The Hillsborough Democrats awarded two scholarships to two well-deserving high school seniors in Hillsborough.

At the Hillsborough High School Senior Awards Night on Thursday, June 8, the Hillsborough Democratic Alliance awarded scholarships to two deserving students in the school's auditorium. Because of their demonstrated leadership skills and community involvement, Joyce Lu and Christopher Rothmann were the winners of the Sonya Martin Memorial Scholarship Award. The presenters of the award were Harry Burke and Jane Staats, the Hillsborough Democratic candidates for Township Committee.
Sonya Anne Martin, who passed away in February, lived in Hillsborough for almost 40 years. After teaching history in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood school district for 33 years, she served on the Hillsborough Township Committee for two terms. She was always meticulously prepared and well informed on the issues. Sonya made major contributions towards the open space and the library in Hillsborough. Among many accolades awarded to Sonya, she earned the Eleanor Roosevelt Award from the Somerset County Federation of Democratic Women. A proud Democrat, Sonya avidly supported and donated to this scholarship. Throughout her life, Sonya demonstrated a steadfast spirit, and she was a strong and intelligent advocate for many, especially for the invisible individual.
