Hillsborough Dukes sweep Watchung Hills in Season Opener

The Dukes traveled to Watchung Hills Aug. 29th, bringing home victories on all levels.

On Sunday, August 29, 2021, the Hillsborough Dukes Pop Warner program traveled to Watchung Hills for their season opener.

The 14U Dukes football defeated the Watchung Hills Wolverines 14-0.

Josh D’Ambrosio scored 2 touchdowns for the Dukes, while kicker Tyler Pirog put it through the uprights for the extra points.

Defensively, Ryan Gear had an interception and a fumble recovery. Zion Grant also had an interception.

The Dukes 12U football team also came through with a victory.

QB Owen Miller led the Dukes with 42 passing yards including a 25 yd TD pass in the second quarter to Xavier Harrigen to open the scoring. RB Mason Ughetta set the tone running for 122 total yards on 12 carries, including the eventual game winning run of 17 yards in the 4th quarter.

Solid team defense overall held the Wolverines to 6 total points while forcing 2 turnovers in the second half. Owen Miller ( 5 tackles) & Ryan Spinelli (4 Tackles) led the defensive charge. LB Xavier Harrigen & DE Caden Walinsky each chipped in with several solo tackles in the effort.
Forced fumbles by Jeff Progin and Frankie Coccuza allowed Bryce Hayden and Mason Ughetta to recover to prevent the Wolverines from continuing drives.

The final score for the 12U Dukes game was 12-6.

Dukes 10U team ended the day with a 19-6 victory over the Wolverines.

Offensively, Mason Smith and John Billings both found the end zone, while defensively, Isaac Harrigan and Jake Jones had key tackles.

The Hillsborough Dukes Flag Football teams had a successful season opener.

The Red team had 4 touchdowns scored by Dante Sica, Hayden Camicia, Michael Lento, and Elijah Escoffery. The team's Michael Lento also had an interception.

The Black team also had 3 touchdowns scored by Peter Damiano, Tristin Saleeba, & Preston Knapp.

Next week the Dukes travel to Colonial High School to play Woodbridge Pop Warner. On September 12th the Dukes will host their first home game of the season.
