Hillsborough High School's Jim McFarland Named Coach Of The Year

Hillsborough High School's Jim McFarland, Jr. was named the High School Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year for 2018.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough High School’s Jim McFarland, Jr. was named the High School Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year for 2018 by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

McFarland becomes the 27th recipient of the award, which has been handed out by the organization since 1991.

Award winners are selected by a volunteer committee, the NSCA’s Coaching Task Force, who determines the winner based on their contributions to the NSCA, their community, and the strength and conditioning profession.

McFarland has been responsible for implementation of Hillsborough High School’s Raider Strength and Conditioning Co-curricular Program, since he began in 1997. In 1999, he was given the charge of coordinating the year-round, after-school strength and conditioning program for students in grades 9-12, and given permission to begin the intermediate school and middle school year-round, co-curricular initiatives.

While expanding these programs, McFarland has been involved with eight collaborative research studies in youth exercise science with The College of New Jersey, and has more than 20 published works. He has been a speaker for the NSCA since his start as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist in 2001, and an adjunct professor for The College of New Jersey’s practical exercise science course for the past four years.

Currently, McFarland serves on the NSCA New Jersey’s Advisory Board, NSCA High School Coaches Working Group, The Raritan Valley Community College Exercise Science Committee, and is the Northeast Kingdom Running Camp (VT) Strength and Conditioning Advisor.

“Congratulations to Coach McFarland for this well-deserved award,” said Scott Caulfield, NSCA Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. “He has changed many lives and exemplifies what it is to be an NSCA professional. We are proud to have him as a member and to be awarded this important accolade.”

McFarland will receive his award at the 41st Annual NSCA National Conference which will be held July 11 to 14 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

McFarland’s Raider Strength and Conditioning Program will run this summer from June 25 to Aug. 2 at Hillsborough High School for students who attend Hillsborough High School, Middle School or Auten Road Intermediate School.
