HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Mayor Gloria McCauley released a statement condemning the actions of a township man who was charged with stealing a political sign on Thursday.
On Oct. 25, Richard Jensen, 62, of Hillsborough was charged with theft of moveable property as a result of an investigation, Hillsborough Police reported.
Jensen reportedly removed a political sign in the area of Roycebrook Road valued at approximately $10. He was issued a summons pending a court appearance, according to police.

"I was saddened to learn last week that a Hillsborough citizen was duly charged after being caught in the act of tampering with political lawn signs," said McCauley. "Nationally and in Trenton, these are turbulent and politically polarizing times – and both parties share in the blame. Let us, here in our community, use this unfortunate incident to reaffirm a policy of zero tolerance for political incivility. As Mayor, the people of Hillsborough have my word and steadfast commitment that the Hillsborough Township Committee and I will do our very best to continue to set the right example for civility in politics, throughout the year and especially during campaign season."
McCauley also noted that tampering with (i.e., stealing or vandalizing) political signs is a violation of other people’s freedom of speech and those who tamper with political signs can be charged with theft, criminal mischief and/or trespassing.
