Hillsborough Local Starts Boys Running Group

HERO Boys encourages kids to run and discover who they are. The season will begin on April 26 and end with a 5K race in June

Basking Ridge, NJ -- Boys will soon have the opportunity to hit the pavement as a former Ridge High School graduate is forming a chapter of HERO Boys in town.

Donna York, who grew up in Basking Ridge but now resides in Hillsborough, is forming a running program for boys in third to fifth grades.

York is the Executive Director of Girls on the Run in Basking Ridge and wanted to offer something for boys as well.

HERO Boys is a youth development and engagement program for boys that uses running as a base activity.

"Through the program boys will be inspired to discover the character and courage that resides inside each one of them to be brave, stand for that which is right, and use their talents and strengths to lead and set the positive example amongst their peers," according to HERO Boys website.

York’s chapter in Basking Ridge will be the fourth one to open in the state, but the only one in Somerset County.

The program will last eight weeks and meet once a week at the Ridge High School track from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m.

At the end of the program the boys will join girls from Girls on the Run to tackle a 5K race on June 19 in Somerville.

Since this is a new venture for York and the area, she is hoping to gain enough attention to open chapters in surrounding towns and eventually host a HERO Boys 5K as well.

“I really want to raise awareness for this program,” York said. “I am looking to expand HEROs and get more volunteers interested in starting a site at their school.”

And although York is a seasoned tri-athlete, she notes that you don’t have to run to be a coach. It’s about inspiring the children.
