Hillsborough Police To Collect Unwanted Prescription Drugs

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Police Department will be collecting unwanted prescription medications on Saturday as part of “Operation Take Back New Jersey" where residents can safely dispose of their unused, unwanted and/or expired prescription medications.

A medication collection site will be hosted on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the lobby of police headquarters, 379 S. Branch Road, in Hillsborough.

Residents are encouraged to bring their unused, unwanted and/or expired prescription medications during this time for disposal as follows:

• The program is anonymous and no questions or requests for identification will be made of anyone disposing of medication.
• Medication may be disposed of either in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and depositing it directly into the disposal box. If the original container is going to be deposited, participants are encouraged to remove any labels in advance that may contain personal identifying information.
• Liquid products, such as cough medicine, must remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure the cap is on screwed on tightly to prevent leakage.
• Syringes and other sharp instruments will not be accepted.

“People who have unwanted or expired prescription medications are encouraged to take advantage of
this free program," said Green Brook Police Chief G. Christopher Kurz. “The program seeks to prevent potential abuses and accidental overdoses that can occur when unwanted medications are left unattended. Even if you don’t personally have such medications, I would encourage speaking with family members who may have them and let them know this program is available to help dispose of them safely. You can also drop off medications on behalf of family members if they need help getting them here."
