Hillsborough Rockin' Raiders - An Inclusive Cheer Team
Changing The World One Cheer At A Time
Started in the Fall of 2016 by students, The Hillsborough Rockin’ Raiders is an inclusive cheer team at Hillsborough High School and is made up of those with and without disabilities. With leadership from Advisor/Coach Robin Besser-Pidany and a group of devoted cheer Mom's and Dad's, this team has changed the face of athletics at the high school.
Created with a grant from the national non-profit The Sparkle Effect, the Rockin’ Raiders were trained and immersed in an intensive and inclusive training. 'Students with and without disabilities on our teams learn from one another and collaboratively seek solutions to challenges' the Sparkle Effect reports on its website.
Their inclusion model of Sparkle Effect teams, who rename themselves once created to reflect their school pride, involve a long-term commitment, a drive to build skills, and a willingness to work collaboratively with teammates over a period of time. In countless towns across America, high school sports are the main event. As these national inclusive teams perform, they shine a big, bright spotlight on the richness that comes from inclusion.

This ground breaking model has sparked the Hillsborough Township school district to create an inclusive track team that competes in the Spring, the Hillsborough Runnin’ Raiders, with many of the same students involved.
The impact they continue to make on each other, the entire high school and the community at large is rooted in their devotion to creating a world that leads with kindness, compassion, empathy and positivity.

The Friday night October 26, 2018 Varsity Homecoming game will mark the last football game for several of the original members of the senior cheer team, who will be honored on the field alongside the football players and the competitive cheer team before the 7pm kick-off at 6:15.What a wonderful legacy, indeed.
