Hillsborough Rotary To Raise Flags For Heroes At Municipal Complex

The annual Hillsborough display will return June 27 to July 11, with proceeds supporting veterans and community projects.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The Rotary Club of Hillsborough is again organizing its “Flags for Heroes” field of honor at the Peter J. Biondi Building, with this year’s display timed to coincide with the 250th Anniversary of the United States on July 4.

The display will be set up at the Township Municipal Complex from June 27 through July 11.

The program is part of a national movement that honors veterans and active-duty military members with American flags bearing the name of the person being recognized on the flagpole.

In Hillsborough, anyone can sponsor a flag with a $50 donation. The sponsorship includes the hero’s name and a short message from the sponsor attached to the flagpole.

"We had a great response in previous years from community members who wished to honor their family member or friend who served in the military," stated Michele Kidd, the Rotary Club of Hillsborough member organizing the event. "Along with our Municipal Township partners, we assembled 100 American flags at the corner of Beekman Lane and South Branch Road. It was a very moving site for everyone who passes by."

Local businesses can also sponsor the display, which helps to make sure a local veteran who has not had a flag sponsored is still honored as part of the field.

This year’s installation is tied to the July 4 semiquincentennial observance, placing the display during a period when many communities are marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.

In Hillsborough, the flags will stand at the municipal complex for about two weeks.

"Flags for Heroes" also serves as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.

According to the Rotary, a portion of the proceeds will go to support Hillsborough veterans, while the remainder will be used to fund a variety of community organizations and projects.
