How To Celebrate June Pride Month In Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Pride Month continues through the month of June in the celebration of LGBTQ culture, rights and identity.

One way to celebrate is the Family PRIDE Night hosted by Downtown Somerville on Thursday, June 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event includes music, games, live entertainment and a Glow in the Dark Park on Division Street.

There is also A Night Of Action For Women's and LGBTQ+ Rights. The event will be held on Wednesday, June 7 at 7 pm at the Chilangos Restaurant in Hillsborough. Speakers from Our Revolution Hillsborough, New Jersey Planned Parenthood, Somerset Safe+Sound, Diamondz DollHaus Drag Queens, and many others will be speaking. The event is family-friendly. Pride Month occurs during June in deference to the Stonewall Uprising, a tipping point in the struggle for equality among people who identify as LGBTQ. New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969. Such raids were common, but patrons fought back, resulting in days of violent clashes across Greenwich village.

The observance started as Gay Pride Day on the last Sunday in June, but soon grew to the point that June calendars are packed with pride parades, parties, workshops, symposiums and concerts across the nation and around the world.
