Saturday is the last free drop-off event in 2023 for residents to get rid of household hazardous waste, like paint and chemicals.
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — This Saturday is the last free drop-off event in Somerset County for residents to safely dispose of household hazardous waste, said the County Division of Solid Waste Management.
The event will be Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the South County Public Works Facility (410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844).
Items that can be dropped off include oil- and latex-based paints, pool chemicals, motor oil and various vehicle fluids, and propane tanks (see more below).

Residents must stay in their vehicles, with materials easily accessible from the trunk, cargo area, or truck bed.
Participants must be ready to show proof of their residency with a current driver's license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address.

Accepted Hazardous Waste Items
Banned or outdated pesticides, antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluid, wet-cell car batteries, motor oil (five-gallon maximum), fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs, ammonia-based cleaners, gasoline, kerosene, mercury switches, oil-based paints, pool chemicals, latex-based paint, propane tanks and rechargeable and button-cell batteries.
Items Not Accepted
DO NOT drop off tires, electronics (computers and televisions), infectious waste, gas cylinders, smoke detectors, air conditioners, or dehumidifiers. Business and commercial vehicles are also not allowed.
