As a former member of the Hillsborough Board of Education, I had the privilege of working closely with Thuy Anh Le, who is currently running for Hillsborough Township Committee with John Beggiato.

When I recently read in the Beacon and Patch that our school district will save more than $1,000,000 annually through new energy efficiency upgrades, I remembered Thuy Anh’s leadership in this effort. During her first year on the Board, she worked with parents and teachers to launch a program that enabled students to research the energy deficiencies in their own school, and then propose ideas to reduce energy consumption. As a result, two schools received grants to implement a program called TEACH – Teaching Energy Awareness with Children’s Help.

In her four years on the Board, Thuy Anh’s leadership turned new thinking into accomplishments. Hillsborough residents now see the financial payoff from her years of hard work. This is Thuy Anh: a leader, bringing ideas to action – and results.

But Thuy Anh’s contributions to our schools went further. She challenged the administration to consider the skills that students would need to address the difficulties they will face in a world they will inherit from us. This included increased STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs in our schools. Initiatives like these made Thuy Anh’s term on the BOE distinctive. She championed ideas that help our students tackle the problems of their generation with confidence and optimism.

In addition to being a curriculum advocate and an environmental steward, she was a fiscal steward as well. As a fellow BOE member, I can assure residents that Thuy Anh kept educational expenditures balanced with affordability, always considering the needs of residents who continue to live here and raise their children in good, safe schools.

When it came to the school budget, Thuy Anh never considered going all the way to the 2% budget cap. She always spoke of prudence and smart investments, like the energy grants noted above, that would pay off.

Thuy Anh conscientiously reviewed Board information before providing her opinion. Diligent in attending BOE meetings, she took her responsibilities very seriously.

Thuy Anh’s foremost concern was providing a quality, stimulating education for Hillsborough students, that was also a good deal for parents and taxpayers. She worked tirelessly toward this goal and, along the way, recognized the incredible value of inspirational teachers and administrators. She wasn’t afraid to be a singular voice for what she believed was right. Sometimes, at the beginning of an issue, she stood alone in her efforts; and then, with well-researched information, won the Board, and the community, to her point-of-view.

I have lived in Hillsborough for three decades, and have known Thuy Anh and her family for many years. She is an accomplished business woman, Girl Scout leader, and citizen advocate. She does it all with a good heart and positive spirit. That is why I urge you to join me to support her candidacy for Township Committee with a vote on November 4th.
