Man Sues Hillsborough Gym, Claims Machine Fell On Him During Workout: Lawsuit

The lawsuit claims the man was using the assisted pull-up and dip machine at Retro Fitness when it fell on him and pinned him to the ground.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A New Jersey man has filed a lawsuit against Retro Fitness in Somerset County, claiming he was seriously injured when a machine fell on him during a workout.

According to the lawsuit filed in Superior Court of Somerset County, Joseph King was a member of Retro Fitness on Route 206 in Hillsborough when the incident occurred on Nov. 19, 2023.

According to court documents, King was using the assisted pull-up and dip machine when it fell on top of him, pinning him to the ground.

The lawsuit claims King suffered "severe and permanent injuries" that required him to spend money on medical care. According to court documents, King was left with permanent disabilities and experienced "great pain and suffering" which required ongoing medical care.

The lawsuit accuses the owners of Retro Fitness and XYZ Installation Company of negligence. It claims they failed to adhere to industry standards regarding machine placement and failed to properly secure the equipment, according to court documents. The lawsuit also accuses the gym of failing to warn members of the risks of using the machines.

According to court documents, King is seeking an unspecified amount of financial damages.
