Our new Hillsborough Branch Health and Wellness Director, Lisa Welsh, is full of energy, and she’s bringing her pep, passion and experience to her role at the Somerset Valley YMCA.
Lisa has always been active. Soccer, basketball, volleyball and track were all part of her impressive repertoire as a child. Lisa continues to play soccer today, and she’s passed the tradition on to her two daughters who play elite soccer.
For the past 10 years, Lisa has taught everything from Pilates to Boot Camp and Strength Interval. Yoga is a personal favorite of hers, and she highly recommends it to anyone looking for increased flexibility. When asked what she most enjoys about teaching fitness, Lisa said, “I enjoy motivating people. To me, it’s a social thing. As you build relationships, you look forward to coming to class.” At the YMCA, we exist to build stronger communities both physically and through the connections we develop with our members. Lisa embodies those values.

The important tip Lisa gives to all of her classes is to check their form when exercising. For instance, when doing squats, Lisa reminds her classes to check that their chests are parallel with their calves and that their knees travel out over their toes. She believes in the importance of form to avoid injury and maximize one’s workout; Lisa is an amazing resource who is eager to show our members proper exercise forms.
Although here just two weeks, Lisa has already planned an innovative Health Challenge where members collect stickers and earn points for completing various fitness activities. The challenge is intended to get our members motivated by turning their everyday fitness activities into a fun game. To give everyone even more motivation, a mini iPad will be awarded to the person who collects the most points. The challenge begins on Jan 20, so be sure to sign up.
